Will Smith apologised to comedian Chris Rock for hitting him during the Oscars ceremony on Monday, as the body that administers the awards announced it would open a formal investigation into the incident. During the lavish Hollywood ceremony, Smith, who was chosen best actor of the night, marched onto the stage and slapped Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Smith, tendering his apology, said that he was wrong and out of line, and that he was ashamed of his actions. The act was unindicative of the man that he aspires to be. He added that violence is poisonous and harmful in all of its manifestations. His actions at the Academy Awards were both disgusting and inexcusable. He went on to say that it is a part of someone’s job to make jokes about him, but the one concerning Jada’s health condition was too much for him to take, resulting in him reacting emotionally. Notably, Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a hair loss issue. As the 94th Academy Awards drew to a close, actor and comedian Chris Rock commented that Pinkett Smith appeared to be ready to star in G.I. Jane 2, a claimed sequel to a film about a bald female soldier.
