While going from Lucknow to Delhi via Moradabad, you come across a crossing with a road going to Bareilly, just 10 Kms from there. This has been aptly named ‘Jhumka Chauraha’. Erected by Bareilly Development Authority, this should be the biggest tribute to Madan Mohan Ji for his song ‘Jhumka Gira Re’ in Mera Saya. This huge Jhumka is a sight to watch.

‘Jhumka Gira Re’, a famous folk song was first recorded in the voice of Miss Dulari in early thirties. Later, the song appeared in the film ‘Dekho Ji’ in 1947. It was sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali, written by Tufail Farooqui and music by Rafique Ghaznavi with few changes in the verses.

The most popular is by Asha Ji in the film Mera Saaya 1966, with further changes in the verses by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Madan Mohan Ji once said that he took hardly five minutes in composing this song. The catchy words ‘Phir Kya Hua’ were by an artist Sharma Ji, who was present in the studio.

All the three versions are set in Raag Peelu.

I feel this huge Jhumka is a tribute to all the artists associated with this song in its own way. Shared by Sasanka Mahapatra.
