It’s been 5 years to be precise when ace actor Aamir Khan led a consortium of stars to create Bollywood’s 100 Crore Club with his Ghajini. It was a start to a new revolution that over the years have steadily seen new entrants to the club including the latest to join the bandwagon being nothing less than a biopic on a living legend, the Flying Sikh – Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which earned about Rs.102 crores at the box office till date and counting.

Some facts about elite Bollywood’s 100 Crore Club:

  • 6 of the 21 films are remakes of South Indian films – Ghajini, Ready, Singham, Bodyguard, Rowdy Rathore, Son of Sardar
  • 4 of the 21 films are remakes of / inspired by Hindi films – Golmaal 3, Don 2, Agneepath, Bol Bachchan
  • Director Rohit Shetty has maximum three films in this club – Golmaal 3, Singham, Bol Bachchan
  • Directors Abhinav Kashyap and  Karan Malhotra are two director to enter this list with their debut films Dabangg and Agneepath respectively not counting A. R. Murugadoss for Ghajini
  • Dabangg and its sequel Dabangg 2 both feature in the club – Both films directed by different directors i.e. Abhinav Kashyap and Arbaaz Khan respectively
  • Late director Yash Chopra’s last film Jab Tak Hain Jaan enters this club
  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag only biopic on a living legend to feature here
  • 3 Idiots only film to be based on a best selling book by Chetan Bhagat to feature in this elite club. It is the only film to cross the 200 crore mark
  • Actor Salman Khan has five films as members of this elite club followed by Ajay Devgn with four films. Shahrukh sets to join Ajay Devgn with his next big release Chennai Express
  • Actresses Kareena Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Asin has four films each to their credits
  • Sonakshi Sinha’s debut film Dabangg joins the list

Aamir Khan’s film Ghajini a remake of its south counterpart earned about Rs.115 crores at the domestic box office and laid the foundation stone for this elite club. But being a master perfectionist that he is, he raised the bar for others to follow with his next blockbuster, 3 Idiots which earned Rs.202 crores at the box office.

Not to be outdone, our Chulbul Pandey aka Salman Khan showed his ‘Khan’ power with his histrionics in Dabangg in 2010. After all Khan Khan ki baat hai.

Rohit Shetty who is gearing up for his big film Chennai Express tomorrow showed why he is the king of masala potboilers with three films in the elite club and in the race to add the fourth with his new release Chennai Express.

However, the latest to join the master league has been the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, on the life of the legendary sprinter the Flying Sikh Milkha Singh. This is the first film of this genre to feature in the 100 crore club.

With Ghajini and the latest Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, all these 21 films have raised the bars for other films to follow suit. But despite all these films raking in the big moolah at the domestic box office, none has been able to unseat the perfectionist’s position at the top with his 3 Idiots.

2012 had been a great year for the Hindi film industry with nothing less than 9 films claiming membership to the elite Bollywood’s 100 Crore Club and grabbing their rightful place in the spotlight preceded by 5 films in the previous year.

In the first 6 months at the Box Office in 2013, three films (Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) have already become a part of this elite gang with some big ticket films lined up to release over the next few months starting with Chennai Express tomorrow.
