The prominent yesteryears actress Shashikala, who featured in numerous supporting roles for almost three decades, breathed her last this Sunday. She was 88. Amongst some notable roles, she was critically acclaimed for Bimal Roy’s Sujata, which released in 1959. During the decade that went by, Shashikala was seen in many television serials like Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, Apnapan, Son Pari and Dil Deke Dekho. In her illustrious career, she was nominated for Filmfare awards in the best-supporting actress category for as many as eight times, out of which she won twice. For her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, the veteran actress was honoured with Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2007.
