Writing With Fire: The Indian Documentary Earns An Oscar Nomination

As the final list of the 94th Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, is out, there is something to cheer about for India. In the documentary category, “Writing With Fire” is the only film to have received a nomination from the country. The documentary, helmed by debutant directors Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, is about the journey of Khabar Lahariya, which happens to be India’s only Dalit women-run newspaper. Writing With Fire is all about the lives of ambitious Dalit women who are led by Meera, their chief reporter, and talks about how they switch from print to digital versions of the news to stay abreast with the changing times. The other documentaries accorded with the nomination include Attica, Flee, Ascension, and Summer of Soul. Speaking about the development, co-director Sushmit Ghosh stated that they are overjoyed because it is a huge step forward for not only them but also Indian cinema.The story, according to him, is about fearless Dalit women who are on the road to redefining what being powerful is all about.
