As the much in demand 66th Cannes Film Festival 2013 came to an end, it showed a good sign for Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox which took home the prestigious Grand Rail d’Or award at the International Critics’ Week, a side competition during the ongoing Cannes.

To add to the glory, the film was brought by Sony Pictures Classics for the USA market including the film being pre-sold to five other countries.

The Lunchbox was also rated among the top 7 films at this year’s 66th Cannes Film Festival which in itself is a big achievement.

The film produced by Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga through their production house Sikhya Entertainment along with Arun Rangachari of DAR Motion Pictures and NFDC along with a slew of other international production houses continues to find a lot of buyers across the world to add to Sony Pictures Classics and other buyers even as it continues to attract more and more buyers in rest of the market.

This was one of the handful of films starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui that was doing the rounds at the prestigious film festival – the other being Bombay Talkies and Monsoon Shootout both garnering mixed response from the audience.

However Irrfan Khan who plays the main lead in The Lunchbox is the main protagonist of the film and the whole story revolves around him and the female protagonist played by Nimrat Kaur.

The Lunchbox is a story of one wrong lunchbox delivery by the ever efficient Mumbai dabbawallas who are the backbone of the home tiffin delivery system in Mumbai. That one wrong delivery brings a young housewife (Nimrat Kaur) in touch with an old man (Irrfan Khan) who’s on the brink of his dull lonely life in a government office. Through the notes shared through the lunchbox, they build their fantasy world revolving around love that threatens to destroy their real lives.

The release date of the film in India is yet to be announced.
