Top Norwegian Film Award for Adil Hussain

UPDATE: 5th Sept. – What Will People Say has been selected as Norway’s Official Entry for Oscars 2019.


In a first, Bollywood actor Adil Hussain became the first Indian to win the Best Actor at the Norwegian National Awards – the country’s top film honours in Norway for his role of an immigrant father in the acclaimed film What Will People Say.

The 2017 released film has Adil Hussain play the role of a strict Pakistani father in an immigrant family and how he comes at a loggerhead with his daughter who develops a relationship with a local boy. The film was extensively shot in Norway and Pakistan.

What Will People Say directed by Iram Haq also brought won her the Best Director Award including National Awards for Best Film and Best Script.

Tweeting on the occasion, Adil said, “Grateful to have Received the #AmandaAwards /#Norwegia National #Awards for #BestActor in a Leading Role for  #WhatWillPeopleSay, Brilliantly Directed by @iramhaq. This award is for #Goalpara #Assam #India for all those who believe that Art Can Break All Boundaries of All Kinds.”

Earlier Adil Hussain had earlier won the Kanon Award at the Kosmorama Film Festival in Norway.

55 year old Adil Hussain who comes from a humble background and belongs to Assam and has acted in various regional language films as well Hindi and English films. His foray in Bollywood started with miniscule roles but it was in 2010 that Ishqiya got him some recognition. This was followed by Saif Ali Khan starrer Agent Vinod, opposite Sri Devi in English Vinglish and then a couple of Hollywood films and there was no looking back.

He had also won the Special Jury Award at the Indian National Film Awards in 2017 for Maj Rati Ketaki and Mukti Bhavan.
